Baruch students, now is not the time to be complacent. Consistency has lulled us to sleep. For the past five years, seemingly small tuition hikes of $300 per year have gone almost unnoticed by CUNY students. This cannot continue.
It is time to wake up. Now, more then any other year, is the perfect time to act and make the student voice heard. Another five years of tuition hikes at CUNY are once again being proposed by CUNY administration, the governor and other elected officials. We are our own last hope.
2016 is a perfect year to stop these tuition hikes from happening. Not only is there a presidential race in which candidates are discussing issues of public higher education, but also the entire state legislature is up for re-election! CUNY has launched their “Your Voice, Your Vote” voter registration initiative and there really is no truer sentiment. Every state legislator is counting on your vote in the primary and general elections. Make your vote count.
You can call your representative’s office and tell them the issues that matter to you. You can voice your concerns to the Baruch student government and other elected student representatives that will help you craft your message. Democracy only works when members of society participate and there is no better time to get involved!
Your Baruch student government members will be on the second floor in the upcoming months registering students to vote and helping spread the word about higher education issues. All students are welcome to come by and debate any issue or help join the cause.
